"Dual-Action" Automatic

"Dual-Action" Automatic

This is a good example of what is sometimes called a "dual-action" automatic knife. The knife opens just as a non-automatic knife would, using the thumb stud on the blade. However, it also has a concealed automatic mechanism that permits full automatic operation. The blade is released to open automatically by tilting the bolster with your thumb. There's not indication of this on the bolster and no friction surface or stud to aid you. The knife has a lot of kick when it opens, due to the size of the blade and requires a strong thumb both to release it and to cock it. It's a heavy knife, with real wood scales and average workmanship and finish. It is quite heavy, but nicely contoured to ride easily in your waistband. There is no safety mechanism, but the chances of accidentally opening it with the bolster release are minimal. On the other hand, the blade is not locked into the closed position and the blade is able to open rather easily if the thumb stud is brushed by clothing. The blade is polished stainless, with a partially serrated edge. Blade quality is also about average. Made in China, of course.

  • MFG: Unknown
  • MODEL: Unknown
  • TYPE: Automatic/Manual (dual-action)
  • ACTION: Side-opening
  • MECHANISM: Leaf spring
  • CLOSED LENGTH: 4.5"
  • BLADE LENGTH: 3.75"
  • PROS: Neat automatic mechanism is concealed, smooth operation, nice-looking wood scales and finish, inexpensive, feels good in hand.
  • CONS: Requires a strong thumb, would probably be illegal for concealed carry due to blade length even if not due to automatic operation, blade is of only average quality.
  • VALUE: A neat knife at a low price.
  • OVERALL OPINION: Again, too big to carry, but useful for camping or other purposes. I don't think that the "concealed" action would fool many people, as it's obviously got some extra mechanism(s) built into it.
